Homesteading Skills

Home of Slapdash Farm

Welcome to Homesteading Skills! Join us as we take baby steps towards going off grid, and getting back to basics. Using permaculture foundations, and recycled tendencies, we're moving fast towards our goal of living well with less cash.

Who are we?

We're the Finley's and the Perkins'; two families who have come together to live a semi self sufficient life. Some of us have come from farming backgrounds. Some have come from city backgrounds. We understand the issues faced when learning how to homestead, and we have created this resource to help you get started.

Mission Statement:

Helping others to learn how to homestead, while living practical, semi-self sufficient life styles and taking baby steps towards going off grid without spending a fortune.

Why semi-self sufficient? Well, in this day-and-age, it just does not make sense to try to do everything on your own! We have resources available to us that those in the past simply did not. We do not grow all our own food, for example, but we do grow a good portion of it. In addition, we help support our neighbors who grow items that we do not.

And we're also realists. Homesteading today does not have to be all-or-nothing. You can grow an organic garden and still buy your eggs at the store (better yet, a farmer's market). You can have solar power and still get your water from the city. There are no set rules when learning how to homestead. You do what you can with what you have to work with.

Everybody has to start somewhere! Whether you are in the city or in a rural location, there are many things you can do to get back to basics, and we'd like to help you get started. Learn from our mistakes and triumphs; get involved and share your experiences; network with others doing similar things throughout the country.

Take a few minutes to create a profile on our forum. We'd love to see your pictures of your homesteading projects. And remember, self sufficient living is a journey, not a destination. No one is 100% where they want to be. That's the beauty of it: goals, achievements, and perseverance. Even if you are brand new to the back to basics lifestyle, please create a profile and share. Let's help one another.

We also believe heavily in the concept of barter. We prefer to trade our time, services, or objects with one another in lieu of cash, and promote the concept to everyone we meet. In fact, we believe so much in this concept, that we want to share it with you. Find out how you can get a free copy of our book:

As for us here at Slapdash Farm, we hope you'll follow our journey and projects and learn from us. Slapdash means "Recycled Functionality" and that is the approach we take to everything we need here on the farm. Repurposing objects has become a skill around here, and we hope that when you see some of our wacky ways to give new life to old objects, it will get the gears in your head turning and the creative juices flowing in your own life.
